P1: Maze Mates V1

Maze Mates V1 is the first prototype of the Project 1 course, where the challenge was to conceive an educational 'hybrid game' that blends physical and digital elements seamlessly.

In Maze Mates, players engage in an immersive experience that can be enjoyed both remotely and in the same physical space. Each participant brings their own Pawn and connects to the game via the Maze Mates website using their smartphone.

The Pawn itself is equipped with gyro and compass sensors, enabling it to discern its position relative to the game board. Coupled with a projector, the Pawn projects each player's view onto the board. However, players face a challenge as their field of vision is limited, adding complexity to navigating the maze.

Players assume different roles, each with unique abilities. The Navigator role grants a comprehensive view of the maze map, allowing the player to guide their teammates by illuminating areas of interest with the Pawn, akin to a flashlight.

Alternatively, players can opt for the Key Collector role, tasked with retrieving keys scattered throughout the maze, or the Scout role, which grants increased mobility and enhanced scouting abilities.

By assigning distinct roles to the players, Maze Mates fosters communication and collaboration among teammates. Success hinges on effective communication and clear role delineation, making it an ideal icebreaker for student teams and an opportunity to hone teamwork skills.
